Cheapest ELD for Trucks: Every Published Price, Ranked (2026)

Short answer

  • Cheapest over 3 years: Garmin eLog, $249.99 once.
  • Cheapest monthly plan: HOS247, $19/month ($684 over 36 months, device free with annual prepay).
  • Watch out for: month-to-month premiums. TT ELD lists $89 month-to-month vs $50 on a 12-month term.

A lot of “cheapest ELD” lists quote prices nobody can verify. This one only uses prices that the vendor itself publishes, checked October 30-31, 2026, and shows a simple 36-month cost so you can compare one-time devices with subscriptions. Quote-only vendors (Motive, Samsara, Geotab, Verizon Connect, Omnitracs, BigRoad and others) are left out because there’s nothing public to rank.

What the cheapest options leave out

Four ways to keep ELD costs down

  1. Prepay a year if you’re sure. Both HOS247 and Blue Ink Tech give the hardware free with annual billing.
  2. Use the phone or tablet you already have. Most of these plans run on your own Android or iOS device.
  3. Don’t buy features you won’t use. A single owner-operator rarely needs a fleet dashboard or geofencing.
  4. Avoid long contracts for one truck. If you sell the truck or lease on to a carrier, a 3-year term can cost more than the device ever saved.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest ELD?
Over three years, the cheapest published option we found is Garmin eLog: a one-time $249.99 device with no monthly fee. The cheapest monthly plan is HOS247 at $19 per vehicle per month, with the device free if you prepay a year.
Are free ELDs really free?
“Free ELD” offers usually mean the hardware is free when you sign a 12-month or longer agreement or prepay a year. You still pay the monthly service fee. Read what happens to the device and the fee if you cancel early.
How much does an ELD cost per month?
Among vendors that publish prices, basic ELD-only plans ran from $19 to $50 a month per truck in October 2026, and month-to-month plans without a commitment can cost more (TT ELD lists $89 a month month-to-month versus $50 on a 12-month term). Large fleet platforms like Motive and Samsara only quote.
Is a cheap ELD less compliant than an expensive one?
Every device on the FMCSA registered list is self-certified to the same technical rule. Price differences come from extras such as GPS tracking, dash cams, IFTA, fleet dashboards and support, not from legal compliance. Always check that the specific device is still registered.
